First garment: tropical shirt

This was the first garment I ever made. It would not have been successful without the Wardrobe By Me pattern. The instruction booklet and YouTube video also helped a lot!

One of the most interesting (startling) things about this project is the yolk across the shoulders. There is an outer and inner yolk. At one point, you roll up the back and the two front parts. Then you join the yolks around them. You end up with what looks like a sausage!! This is normal and then you ‘bag out’ through the neck hole. I was convinced I had made a mistake at this point. So, I watched the YouTube video several times to confirm that this was how it was supposed to look.

Bagging out through the neck hole

Once you have done the bagging out you continue with the sewing of side seams and then attach the sleeves. Attaching the front pockets and the collar follows and you are done apart from the buttons and button holes. I did not do the buttons because at this point I realised the size was wrong (more below).

It’s a good idea to steam press as you go as this makes the handling of the material easier!

LEARNING POINT! Read the instructions rally carefully to get the correct size. In the world of Wardrobe by Me I am an X-L size but I assumed I needed Large. So the shirt is complete, and I am thrilled with my first ever make. However, I am using it as an over shirt as it is tight across the stomach. There will be more made with this pattern. I purchased the PDF file so I can reuse it over and over again.
